A company in the 21st century daring to take a step away from the constant need to have the highest tech gadgets around. In a world where we are all glued to our phones, they have created a phone that is designed to be used as little as possible. The Light Phone. Weird or utterly brilliant? Let’s look at the facts.
Light was founded by Joe Hollier and Kaiwei Tang because they feel “our phones have become our nervous habit, our invisible crutch.” They also believe “Technology should help us appreciate life more. It should serve, not enslave, us.”
So what is it? How does it work? It basically a super small phone that only has the capacity to make and take calls. It can’t receive texts or emails. The best bit? You don’t need to change your number or throw away your expensive smart phone. It works using a nano sim and a computer app. It can accept a nano sim with the same number as your smart phone and the app allows you to set 9 speed dial numbers. There is no contact book so your 9 speed dial numbers are the people you speak to regularly and any other number needs to be manually input.
So leave your smartphone at home, be in control of when you check your emails or read that comment on Facebook. The Light Phone allows you to be present without entirely losing touch.
The Light Phone is just that… a phone. It will set you back about £150 but ultimately promises to set you free. Read more about Joe and Kaiwei’s vision here.
