Q&A with Joe Charles, Davlyn Construction

Q&A with Joe Charles, Davlyn Construction

This week we are speaking to Joe Charles, the director of Davlyn Construction Ltd. We wanted to find out a bit more about him and how the year is looking for them as a company.

1. What do you specialise in?

Davlyn Construction Limited undertakes a variety of contracts including new build, design & build, refurbishment and repairs & maintenance contracts ranging from commercial and industrial developments to residential buildings. Typical projects range from small maintenance jobs up to £4m new developments.

2. Where do you operate?

Areas of operations extend across mainland UK.

3. What has been your favourite project to date?

I have personally worked on so many projects it’s difficult to single out one as my favourite. I prefer the more challenging projects, the ones that make you think, are unusual in their design and have various difficult concepts which are technical. It can be seen as a real achievement when these projects get handed over on programme, within budget and with a satisfied client.

4. What projects have you got coming up this year?

Various commercial and industrial projects around the UK. Check out our Twitter page to stage update.

5. What hurdles do you come across when you’re not working locally?

The main issue is being able to find the correct tradesman to maintain the high standards and quality of work that we insist on all projects. It is not always feasible to utilise our own directly employed staff which is why it’s important to have a reliable agency that also works nationwide.

6. What do you want people to know about Davlyn?

We have built up a reputation for our informal and trustworthy approach to building and offering a personal service, which some larger organisations may find difficult to provide. After steady and controlled growth for over 30 years Davlyn is still family owned and run as a traditional builder using a base of directly employed site operatives and management staff. We are proud to have built up strong working relationships with many blue chip clients which has resulted in a continued flow of repeat business. Our aim on all projects is to work as part of a team, maintaining good working relationships with the design team, cost consultants and clients.  We constantly strive to maintain a high quality end product and are capable of undertaking fast track projects when the need arises.

7. What do you look for in employees or temporary candidates?

Good quality CSCS tradesmen with a good work ethic who are reliable and committed to the job with the ability to learn, understand and produce the quality of work that we are renowned for.

8. What is your favourite thing about construction?

I like how every day is different when working in construction. There are always new challenges which have to be overcome and there’s always new ways and construction methods to achieve this. This role requires a lot of analysis and planning to ensure that things are done correctly the first time, and I feel that these skills are constantly being developed. Every day is always a school day in the construction industry.
